The Reason Why Defense Spare Parts Costs Got Out of Hand
Article Abstract:
Internal audits have raised questions concerning the excessive spending on spare parts by the Defense Department. Due to cuts in defense funding, the department was forced to buy parts in smaller quantities causing an increase in price. The parts needed are made from materials that are only made by one manufacturer, making it difficult to shop around for the best price. Maintenance of older equipment is also costly. The end result of costly parts is less national defense and less competition.
