The effect of old age assistance on retirement

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the effects of old age assistance on retirement and how means-tested benefits influence retirement behavior. Information from the 1940 and 1950 Censuses were utilized to determine the impact of old age assistance benefit levels on labor force participation. Findings showed that the growth of means-tested transfers fo the elderly supported a critical function in the development towards earlier retirement. Results also indicated that old age assistance significantly affected labor force participation.
