The prison dilemma
Article Abstract:
The overpopulation and lack of public funds of prison institutions in California pose a great problem to state lawmakers and officials. Some politicians responded to the problem by passing tougher sentencing bills to control prison population but these were found to be ineffective. Experts say that redirecting funds to early intervention in schools, communities and juvenile programs will not cut spiraling prison costs. Conservative lawmakers want to impose tougher sanctions to criminals in prison while studying the benefits of turning some operations to the private sector.

Is the Hope head an Italian Goddess? A case of circumstantial evidence
Article Abstract:
The over life-sized marble head of a female bought by antiques collector Henry Thomas Hope in Italy was made by a Greek sculptor in Rome in the late Republican period. Although thought to be an earlier Greek original, evidence from the hairstyle of the female, the akrolithic technique, and comparisons with Roman statues prove that the sculpture was made in Rome. The Hope head, lying in the University of Pennsylvania Museum, probably portrays a deity as is evident by its size and idealized traits.
