Cash in your face: the cost of racial and ethnic discrimination in housing

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted to investigate the cost difference that ethnic minorities pay in terms of housing costs compared to white homebuyers. Survey results suggest that African-American and Hispanic homebuyers must either settle for housing that is not as suited for their needs as is the housing found by whites or pay higher search costs than whites do or both, but they do not indicate the magnitude of the loss in housing satisfaction or of the increase in search costs. It has also been found that discrimination in the moving business makes it more difficult for African-American than for white households to find housing with a surplus that is large enough to compensate them for moving costs. No study has investigated discrimination by moving companies.
