A century of defining ulcer characteristics

Article Abstract:

The ulcers chapter in A. Pearce Gould's 'Elements of Surgical Diagnosis' is a good source of information on ulcers, despite being written nearly 100 years ago. The diagnosis section covers areas such as ulcer position, shape, origin, and the condition of the ulcer and surrounding tissues. The general description of ulcers is comprehensive as well, covering areas such as pain, discharge, and the base and edge of an ulcer.

Venous leg ulcer study risk factors: who will study the problem?

Article Abstract:

Risk factors for venous leg ulcers need closer study. No research has identified how venous hypertension leads to chronic wounds. The most common treatment for venous leg ulcers is compression stockings, which cost less than 2% of surgical treatment for this condition. Between 1% and 3% of the elderly develop leg ulcers, and the condition heals only 60% of the time, so prevention should be a major focus for research.

Evaluating research: what it means to you

Article Abstract:

Clinical wound research is evaluated on the basis of internal and external validity. Internal validity measures the influence of random error and bias, while external validity refers to how applicable research results are to all groups. The most reliable evaluative standard is the randomized clinical trial, although clinicians will have to decide how to deal with the consequences of withholding helpful therapy.
