A cutting cost analysis of hysterectomies

Article Abstract:

Studies of the cost of hysterectomies show that laparoscopy is more expensive, since it takes a longer time in the operating room, although it requires a shorter hospital stay. A 1993-1994 study in Baltimore, MD, showed that the laparoscopy cost an average of $6,116, compared to $4,221 for the traditional vaginal hysterectomy, or $5,084 for a vaginal hysterectomy assisted by laparoscopic procedures. The authors are investigating further to find which alternative gives women the fastest recovery.
