A pressure ulcer toolbox for facilitating hospital-wide quality

Article Abstract:

Many New York State hospitals might benefit from a toolbox containing information about pressure ulcers and how to prevent them. A study of 1,253 surgical patients at 67 hospitals found that 88% had one or more risk factors for pressure ulcer development. However, fewer than half were repositioned regularly or received pressure relief or friction reduction measures. Twenty-eight percent of the high-risk patients developed pressure ulcers. The toolbox could contain a patient brochure, clinical practice guidelines and an educational slide show.

Preliminary results of a randomized, controlled study of a pressure ulcer prevention system

Article Abstract:

The MicroPulse mattress may reduce the development of pressure ulcers in surgery patients. Researchers randomly assigned 97 surgery patients to lie on a MicroPulse mattress during and after surgery and 98 to lie on a gel pad during surgery followed by a conventional hospital mattress. All patients were examined daily for seven days. Only one patient in the MicroPulse group developed a pressure ulcer compared to seven in the other group.

A comparative, randomized, controlled study to determine safety and efficacy of preventive pressure ulcer systems: preliminary analysis

Article Abstract:

The MicroPulse mattress appears to reduce the risk of developing pressure ulcers in surgery patients. Researchers randomly assigned 112 surgery patients to lie on a MicroPulse mattress during surgery and for seven days after and 105 patients to lie on a gel pad during surgery and a Pressure Guard mattress for seven days after. Only one patient in the MicroPulse group developed an ulcer, compared to seven patients in the other group.
