Awareness campaign nets sorting, recycling benefits
Article Abstract:
Managers of St. Mary's Hospital and Medical Center, Grand Junction, CO, learned that their medical wastes exceeded national standards, so they initiated an awareness program. The ratio of medical wastes to ordinary wastes was reduced to 30%. In addition, separation of non-medical waste materials for recycling brought in $3,300 compared to expenses of $4,500. The hospital management also appointed a task force to consider options concerning incineration, hauling and microwave treatment of wastes.

Proper waste sorting begins with good definitions
Article Abstract:
Alta Bates Medical Center, Berkeley, CA, succeeded in cutting in half the projected cost of hauling waste after the hospital shut down its incinerator because it needed expensive upgrades. Medical personnel were trained to distinguish between medical waste and general hospital waste. The hospital has two waste hauling contracts, one for ordinary waste and the other for infectious wastes, which are carefully stored in locked containers until pickup time.
