Board backs community benefit study in Connecticut

Article Abstract:

Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT, conducted a four-part survey of its community benefits. The survey included focus groups, a self-evaluation from the board, a community benefit survey distributed to patients and hospital staff and a community problems survey sent to local residents. The results were used to identify and target area health problems such as Lyme disease. In addition, the hospital used the results to plan community programs such as a county-wide health task force and to develop a list of hospital-sponsored community benefit activities.

Paid to produce

Article Abstract:

Effectiveness of hospital CEOs can be easily measured and linked to pay and community health. The community health concept was adopted by Pennsylvania's Crozer-Keystone Health System in 1991, and Lutheran Health Systems of Fargo, ND, also links pay to community health. Under the community health mechanism hospital CEO and administrator bonuses averaged 33.7% of base salary for those who received them, according to the Hay Group of Philadelphia, PA.

Dynamic pay initiatives

Article Abstract:

The 1993 Hay Hospital Compensation Survey shows that hospital compensation patterns are changing. For example, more hospitals are using incentives linked to performance, although the use of such incentives in hospitals is generally less than in other industries. In addition, base pay is increasing at a slower rate than before, although executives still averaged increases of 7.6%.
