Complying with the patient self-determination act: legal, ethical, and practical challenges for hospitals
Article Abstract:
The Patient Self-Determination Act, passed in Dec 1991, requires some healthcare institutions to pass information to patients about advanced directives, including such items as health care power of attorneys or living wills. However, compliance with this legislation may not be easy to do or to understand. Providers must decide who will give this information to the patient, and the legal and ethical aspects of passing such data.
