Congress is driving, but we've got the map

Article Abstract:

Congress has decided to balance the federal budget by 2002 but has not yet decided how to achieve that goal. A healthcare industry document, 'For a Healthier America: An Agenda to Improve the Nation's Health Care System,' contains policy recommendations designed to protect Medicare and Medicaid and lead to a balanced budget. Those recommendations include depoliticizing Medicare funding decisions by establishing an independent commission, and cutting Medicare and Medicaid regulation.

Health care's big picture

Article Abstract:

The Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care shows an unequal distribution of costs and health care resources across the US. For example, acute care costs more than $1,600 in parts of New Mexico and Alaska, but only $503 to $978 in Oregon and Washington State. Hospitals and health care networks would like to improve the distribution of these resources and create a more integrated, equitable health care system.
