Coping with Word Processing Equipment Vendor Selection
Article Abstract:
When selecting a word processing (WP) system it is important not to choose equipment that is neither too powerful and sophisticated for current needs nor too basic and rigid. Important areas to consider are management goals, information needs, staffing requirements, present equipment, physical space and access time requirements. Evaluation of the vendor and the vendor's equipment should include equipment requirements and available alternatives, the availability of local maintenance, price, vendor support, vendor training, vendor demonstrations, expansion capabilities, installation assistance and vendor reputation. Financing decisions - renting, leasing or buying - must be made in light of total organization considerations and financial status. A successful WP system implementation requires strong management commitment.

Enhancing Word Processing Productivity with an Optical Character Reader
Article Abstract:
The optical character reader (OCR) can rapidly translate typed text into digital signals and therefore provide a link between the typewriter and the word processor. Characteristics of OCRs are multiple front recognition, low error rates, high reading speed, ability to accept stacks of paper and the ability to link to most major word processing systems. To determine cost justification of an OCR desired turnaround time, the effect of delays and the auxiliary needs that the OCR can satisfy must be considered.
