The Partners merger: still shaking up Bean Town health care?

Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, both in Boston, formed a strategic alliance in Mar 1994. They are combined in the Partners HealthCare System and have $1 billion in annual revenues and offer approximately 1,500 beds. These two major academic medical centers are affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Former competitors, they will now offer high quality, low cost care.

HLW International, in conjunction with a survey of healthcare executives, compiled a list of design guidelines for ambulatory care services. Planners are advised to use time-specific instead of block appointment-scheduling, to provide generic and highly flexible examination/treatment spaces, to wire facilities for full computerization, and to treat ambulatory care as a business.
