Great comebacks: the 1992 turnaround contest winners

Article Abstract:

Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown, NC; Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, TX; and St Luke's Health System were honored for turning their financial performances around in the Great Comebacks contest sponsored by Hospitals magazine and Coopers and Lybrand. Bladen had to contend with a poor quality image before it could improve its performance. Medical Center attributes its success to involving the staff and the whole community in the effort. St Luke's engineered its turnaround by risking Chapter 11 bankruptcy to get its debt payments restructured. Information on the finalists is also presented.
