Article Abstract:
Washington, DC's Greater Southeast Healthcare System was the winner of the 1989 Foster G. McGaw Prize for being the best health care delivery system in the nation to meet community health and social needs. The system, which is headed by Pres and CEO Dalton Tong, is proactive in its community outreach programs. The system has also been able to maintain profits through aggressive cost control measures. Descriptions of how Greater Southeast meets it health care responsibilities is included.

Article Abstract:
Physician/hospital organizations must be structured so that they can compete in a managed care system. Physicians must take responsibility for controlling provided care guidelines and management. Hospitals need to begin reading market forces in a far more competitively priced environment. Both parties should understand the importance of capitation as a cost-control mechanism, and should invest in outpatient facilities and home care consultants.
