In growing alliance, rurals see their future in integrated care

Article Abstract:

Three rural community hospitals cooperated to form Vantage Health Group, a preferred provider organization with 900 physicians serving 60,000 residents of 17 counties in northwest Pennsylvania. Starting in 1982, the group formed a partnership with a fourth institution, St Vincent Health Center in Erie, as a source of tertiary care. The terms of organization stipulated that hospitals may choose whether or not to participate in special services, and if two hospitals decide to provide a service, it will be offered.

Through the acquisitions St. Luke's learned what the community of these hospital's wanted and needed and worked with them to satisfy those needs. Because of St. Luke's experiences it hopes its health-services can be incorporated into other hospital's programs.

One isn't the loneliest number

Article Abstract:

Lexington Medical Center, a county-owned hospital in West Columbia, SC, is staying independent after rejecting mergers with nearby facilities and offers from companies such as Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. The hospital earned $7.9 million in 1995 before one-time expenses, and may perform better in 1996. The hospital's advantages include a growing local population and physicians, workers and residents who want the hospital to remain on its own. Managed care has yet to sweep South Carolina.
