Left ventricular assist as a viable alternative for cardiac transplantation
Article Abstract:
Left ventricular assist systems (LVASs) can be implanted and are used more and more for patients with end-stage heart disease and waiting for a transplantable heart. LVAS was intended originally for use as an alternative to transplantation. It has been approved only as a temporary interim solution for now. The HeartMate Vented Electric (VE) LVAS comes from Thermo Cardiosystems, Inc. (Woburn, MA). Patient complications, nursing implications, and ethical and financial considerations and the procedure itself must be considered.
