Malpractice risk the same for female and male ob/gyns

Article Abstract:

Malpractice suits against women obstetricians and gynecologists occur at the same rate as those against men in those specialties, according to analysis of a survey by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Infant brain damage is the most common cause of malpractice suits against obstetricians, followed by failure in diagnosis, especially for missed diagnosis of breast cancer. Physicians won more than 75% of cases that went to trial. Other findings of the survey are detailed.

Patient self-determination: sharing the power

Article Abstract:

With the passage of the Patient Self-Determination Act it has become more apparent that the moral and ethical questions patients have about their right to die need to be addressed. Patient's now take on more of the responsibility as prime decision maker in right to die cases, and therefore need more than ever the expertise of the attending physician. Therefore, medical institutions need to supply the information and other services needed for a patient to make an informed decision.

Health care reform issues call for plain talk

Article Abstract:

Physicians must phrase health care reform issues clearly and plainly if they are to educate the public during media interviews. They must learn to circumvent the filter of the interviewer and speak directly to the audience. Several techniques for dealing with interviews are presented, such as anticipating negative questions and not trying to convince the interviewer of one's point of view.
