Managed care and the transformation of the medical rehabilitation industry
Article Abstract:
The shift from the traditional fee-for-service to the new managed care system has caused changes in the medical rehabilitation industry. To analyze the impact of this trend, medical rehabilitation providers in the leading markets of San Diego, CA; Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; and Worschester, MA, were studied. The changes observed included a decrease in the use of acute rehabilitation services, a rise in the use of subacute care, downsizing of hospital staff, and horizontal and vertical integration between medical rehabilitation facilities.

Medical knowledge overload: a disturbing trend for physicians
Article Abstract:
Medical retrieval systems and computerized databases should be developed to help physicians combat information overload caused by the ever-increasing medical literature. Physicians lack access to these systems because of lack of training. Medical schools should therefore provide access to computerized databases and offer information delivery systems. Despite limited time, physicians must keep abreast with medical breakthroughs, to maintain excellence in their field.

Transformation of an academic medical center: lessons learned from restructuring and downsizing
Article Abstract:
The reorganization at one academic medical center is examined. Assessments were made on the three stages of the reorganization, namely, planning, implementation and evaluation. It is shown that the change process led to improved occupancy as well as recognition for the hospital from a number of organizations. The hospital's experience also gives credence to the theory that there is no single best way to implement organizational change.
