Multiple productivity measurement approaches for management
Article Abstract:
Hospital managers are frequently faced with problems on the evaluation of hospital material productivity. Comparing between two productivity indexes, the Multicriteria Performance/Productivity Measurement Technique (MC/PMT) and data envelope analysis (DEA), demonstrates no significant difference in results when applied to the materials department. Thus, these two approaches may overcome the multidimensionality not only of materials management but of other systems as well.

Observations regarding the Brown-Johnson debate
Article Abstract:
The introduction of Medicare and Medicaid in 1966, with its retroactive cost reimbursement and fairness to both the hospital and care purchaser, proved to be more of a bane under a contrived economic environment. An ideal managed care marketplace will remain a dream unless challenges are addressed. Among these are overutilization of services by a minority, social irresponsibility, inappropriate deployment of limited resources, and a host of cultural factors.

A cost-savings analysis of the use of a predictive instrument for coronary-care-unit admission decisions
Article Abstract:
Admissions to the intensive coronary care unit have included patients without cardiac ischemia. The use of computer-derived acute ischemic heart disease predictive instruments has been proposed to evaluate patients with acute chest pain at the emergency room. An analysis of hospital and patient economics using this approach is presented.
