New Millennium Strategic Initiatives for Health Care Purchasing

Article Abstract:

Strategic emphasis in purchasing and supply chain management continue to evolve in most industries. The strategic focus in purchasing has not begun to reach even minimal potential. This may be due to the continued operation of a purchasing function in the traditional procurement role--that of reactionary responses to operational needs--bypassing opportunities for strategic outcomes. Health care purchasing professionals have available specific approaches to augment and enhance strategic objectives to support the health care delivery goals. To remain competitive in today's marketplace, companies must develop performance measurements that will reveal current baseline values, highlight opportunities for improvement, and drive operational strategies. This article will focus on understanding the need for performance measurements, identifying overall performance measurement targets, and applying sound measurements that satisfy organizational objectives. Information will include the importance of aligning measurements with strategies, converting to new types of measurements, and using specific measurements to achieve world-class goals.
