Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, Camden, New Jersey
Article Abstract:
Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center is a 375-bed teaching hospital located in Camden, NJ, where the local economy has declined, unemployment is high, and 60% of the population receives welfare. A prenatal care program has reduced infant mortality rates, exacerbated by teen-age pregnancies. Also, volunteers have been trained to provide non-medical services to the aged. Medicare and Medicaid changes threaten the hospital's future in spite of restructuring efforts.

Same bed, different dreams
Article Abstract:
The major difference between for-profit and not-for-profit hospitals is the basic philosophy about the hospital's allegiance. A for-profit institution is bound to keep the interests of its shareholders above all others, while the not-for-profit hospital first considers the needs of its community. Both types of hospitals must find means of financial survival in a changing health care environment.

Brain teasers
Article Abstract:
Hospitals face a number of crucial management issues, including physician recruitment, governance and business strategy. Not all physicians can participate in the governing board of a hospital. Non-profit or for-profit status does not matter as much as having a defined mission and capital to pursue that mission.
