Outcomes measurement in hospitals: can the system change the organization?

Article Abstract:

Quality improvement in the delivery of medical care is an important goal for hospitals. One way to achieve this improvement is the use of MedisGroupsII, a clinical outcomes measurement information system that evaluates the appropriateness of care, the efficiency of the hospital and the effectiveness of its care against a database of mortality and morbidity statistics. Although using such a tool would suggest that hospitals would improve care and implement different clinical practices, research among 31 hospitals found that only four claimed improvement resulted from using the system.

Customer information and the quality improvement process: developing a customer information system

Article Abstract:

Total quality management efforts within a health care organization are assisted by the implementation of a customer information system (CIS). Customers are defined as persons or groups, internal or external, that receive services from the organization. A CIS data base collects and archives customer information to be accessed by any who need such knowledge to make informed decisions regarding improvement of medical care delivery. A sample CIS application is given.

Collection performance: an empirical analysis of not-for-profit community hospitals

Article Abstract:

Research into the variables for accounts receivable performance among not-for-profit community hospitals found that there were many factors influencing collection success. Excess collection time changes, from 1986 to 1988, in the 1,246 hospitals surveyed were found to be brought about by such variables as state location of the hospital, contractual allowances with third party payers and return on assets.
