Patient education for discharge after coronary bypass surgery in the 1990s: are patients adequately prepared?
Article Abstract:
Cardiac patients with shorter postoperative hospital stays tend to be better prepared by discharge education. Patient education prior to discharge prepares patients to care for themselves at home. Researchers compared 300 cardiac patients from six hospitals to evaluate the adequacy and effects of discharge education. Patients uniformly felt prepared for discharge, despite several different educational methods. Patients were very interested in information about wound care, medications, and whom to call for information. Videotaped education was rated as less helpful than live teaching.

Perceived learning needs of men and women after myocardial infarction
Article Abstract:
It may be advisable to tailor educational programs by gender for patients after a heart attack. After a heart attack, 121 male and female patients completed questionnaires ranking the importance of 43 educational items on heart attacks and recovery. Overall, there were six items that men and women ranked differently. Treatments were women's highest priority compared to risk factors for men. Women preferred doctors to provide information while men preferred nurses.
