Patient product availability through the use of systems thinking: developing coherent relationships
Article Abstract:
The concept of systems thinking and the process of how it can be used in materials management to characterize and enhance the procurement of materials needed is explained. Systems thinking can be understood in the definition of a system as an interdependent whole in which the parts define the behavior of the whole and the way parts can alter the behavior of the whole is dependent on how other parts perform. This approach provides insights into the interdependence of all systems and how structural goals can help improve hospitals' patient care system.

The modern health care materiel manager
Article Abstract:
The changing role of the materiel manager in the health care industry is attributed to the myriad of changes affecting the economic viability of hospitals. Because of these pressures, materiel managers have become a more integral part of the hospital management team. The altered roles also require new capabilities on the part of materiel managers. Specifically, they need to be more adaptable, should have a higher educational level and must have greater human, conceptual and technical skills.
