Pediatric traumatic brain injury
Article Abstract:
Nurses treating traumatic brain injury in children may need to consider not just the initial injury but secondary complications and the impact on long term nervous system maturation. Brain injury is the number one cause of death from trauma in children. Treatment of the initial injury can prevent serious secondary complications. Treatment involves maintaining blood flow to the brain, controlling intracranial pressure, and decreasing oxygen consumption by the brain. Rehabilitation can facilitate brain maturation.

Care of the critically injured child: nonaccidental injuries
Article Abstract:
About 25% of children's deaths from trauma in the US are the result of intentional acts. Pediatric trauma teams must determine if injuries were caused by an accident or by intentional acts. Injuries fall into two major categories: penetrating injuries as from a gunshot, and blunt trauma injuries. Highly skilled assessment begins with the primary assessment to ensure basic stability. It is followed by the more comprehensive secondary assessment.
