Pharm.D. seen as new entry-level pharmacy degree

Article Abstract:

The American Council on Pharmaceutical Education issued a statement asserting that the six-year PharmD doctorate degree is likely to become the only entry-level degree evaluated and accredited for the pharmacy profession. Proponents of the PharmD standard argue that it is necessary because of pressures to reduce costs, and changes in the science of pharmacy and patient care delivery systems. Opponents assert that the new standard might exacerbate pharmacists shortages and over-prepare students for entry-level positions.

Hospital administrators are being urged to evaluate their procedures in light of a recent increase in tuberculosis cases. Other federal agencies, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, are considering passing further regulations to help reduce the risk to medical personnel.
