Pharmacologic issues in aging

Article Abstract:

Drug therapy for the critically ill older patient should take specific physiological reactions into account. Since medication use is rising among older people, additional drugs should be closely monitored. Pharmacokinetics superimposed on the aging process results in changes in drug absorption, drug metabolism, distribution, and excretion within the body. Pharmacodynamically, drug effects can be larger than intended, especially when using anticholinergic drugs.

Alcohol abuse in older persons: implications for critical care

Article Abstract:

Critical care nursing of older patients involves monitoring potential withdrawal symptoms from alcohol abuse. Alcoholism is a hidden problem among the geriatric population, requiring careful vigilance, diagnosis, and early intervention. Since long-term alcohol abuse may complicate even minor illnesses, detoxification procedures should focus on patient safety. A comprehensive treatment approach extending beyond the hospital stay is necessary to assure success.

Health assessment of the older patient

Article Abstract:

Critical nursing care of the older patient requires the interpretation of data pertinent to the physiology of aging, since people over 60 years old make up more than 50% of critical care patients. Nursing plans for the aged should be individualized with a view toward neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, immunologic, hematologic, integumentary, and laboratory changes.
