Physicians and the ADA
Article Abstract:
Hospitals should consider physicians with staff privileges as employees under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, although the courts have not yet ruled on a case establishing this. In recruiting physicians, hospitals should refrain from asking questions about their health or offering them a position contingent on a physical examination. In addition, although hospitals are not required to hire a disabled individual who is not qualified for a job, they are required to provide 'reasonable' accommodations to help the person. Additional information on complying with the act is provided.

Patchwork access: primary care in EDs on the rise
Article Abstract:
An emergency room utilization study conducted by the American Hospital Association shows that at least 1/3 of all visits to an emergency room in the four communities surveyed was for primary care. The communities surveyed include Milwaukee, WI; Seattle, WA; Buffalo, NY; and Dallas/Fort Worth, TX. The findings were not unusual; a General Accounting Office survey showed that 43% of emergency room visits were non-urgent. Several hospitals have instituted accessible primary care clinics to siphon off some emergency room patients and save money.
