So much for collegiality
Article Abstract:
Medical schools often encounter problems gaining the necessary support from the school's administration for mergers, usually because of faculty disputes and university requirements of consensus. In the 1990s, only two medical schools' hospital mergers have been attempted, the failed consolidation of New York University and Mount Sinai medical centers and the successful merger between Hahnemann University and the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Agreement among medical school faculty members is crucial to taking the consolidation process forward.

Managed care: far from academic
Article Abstract:
Academic medical centers need to respond better to the demands of the marketplace, which is trending ever quickly towards managed care systems. Failure to respond to these new demands could threaten the future of medical teaching and medical research, as well as the existence of the medical centers themselves. These academic institutions face a number of demands, including serving Medicaid patients, but they will have to learn how to provide health services while moving towards managed care concepts.

Second thoughts on selling
Article Abstract:
University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital CEO Kevin Lofton discusses why the hospital was slated for sale and then not sold. The hospital had lost some state funding, had projected lower revenues and management observed the financial gains realized by other university hospitals that were sold. The hospital received management advice from suitors and has increased its rate of internal integration since the sale was stopped.
