Synergy in Seattle

Article Abstract:

Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound, a health maintenance organization (HMO), and Virginia Mason Medical Center, an academic medical center, have fashioned a successful partnership in Seattle, WA's competitive health-care market. The companies have capitalized on the marketing appeal of combining an HMO with a research-oriented healthcare facility and have managed to reduce operating costs through consolidation. Sixty thousand people will have enrolled in their mutually-operated health insurance programs by the end of 1996.

Who's afraid of capitation now?

Article Abstract:

Experts once thought that capitation would become common throughout the US, but in 1998 most hospital capitation is on the West Coast, and it is no longer HMOs, but hospitals, demanding capitation. Boston's Partners Healthcare System, for example, has partnered with its doctors to form Partners Community Health Care, which has completed global fee agreements covering the care of about 200,000 patients.
