Technology utilization in the cardiac surgical patient: SvO2 and capnography monitoring

Article Abstract:

Mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) can be a powerful indicator of oxygen delivery and tissue oxygen consumption. Using a pulmonary artery catheter, mixed venous blood can be sampled periodically or monitored continuously. Normal Sv02, indicating adequate tissue oxygen delivery, is 60-75%. Values outside this range may reflect inadequate oxygen supply, inadequate blood flow, or altered oxygen consumption. SvO2 monitoring can reduce medical costs when used appropriately. Capnography measures exhaled carbon dioxide, used in evaluating pulmonary blood flow, ventilation, and intubation.

Recognition and management of shock in the pediatric patient

Article Abstract:

Death from shock may be prevented if symptoms of shock are identified and treated promptly. The five types of shock are hypovolemic, cardiogenic, septic, anaphylactic, and neurogenic. A child who is in shock may be identified by the fast heart and breathing rates. Blood pressure may not drop right away. The main treatment goals are to increase oxygen delivery and minimize oxygen demand. Ventilation, fluid administration, and vasoactive drugs are all important therapies.
