The Nature of Hospital-HMO Affiliations
Article Abstract:
Using data from a 1980 survey of community hospitals, the relationships between hospitals and Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) is examined. Results include: 1) HMO's are a small part of hospital usage, 2) HMO- affiliated hospitals are more apt to have medical school affiliations than non-HMO-affiliated hospitals, 3) HMO-affiliated hospitals are often larger than non-affiliated, and 4) both proprietary and voluntary hospitals were found to be affiliated. Agreement characteristics range from memorandums of understanding to formal contracts. Some hospitals were found to sponsor HMOs. Some HMOs receive price breaks during their early years, although substantial cost savings cannot be inferred.

Elderly patients' satisfaction with the outcome of their health case complaints
Article Abstract:
Factors that influence the satisfaction of elderly patients over the outcome of their health problems have been studied. Questionnaires were sent to a sample of 6,000 elderly residents inquiring about their experience in clinic visits and hospital stays. Results indicate that elderly patients were only moderately satisfied with the resolution of their health complaints. This finding has several implications. Health care providers may just be marginally addressing the health concerns of the elderly. Efforts must also be made so that doctors receive adequate training in gerontology.
