The (almost) impossible dream

Article Abstract:

St. Luke's Methodist Hospital has merged with the Iowa Health System, and has almost reached its goal of establishing a unified community with a reasonably-priced health care system. Iowa's population is scattered over the state in small towns, which makes any unified health care system more difficult to create, because large insurance carriers are not attracted to such settings. St. Luke's has searched for partners to help reach this goal.

Same difference: is your hospital's makeover merely cosmetic? If it's not backed up by a sound strategy, you're wasting your money

Article Abstract:

Healthcare facilities must introduce actual changes, not superficial ones, if they wish to convince potential patients that their facility is the one to use. Hospitals do not always plan their new operations carefully and produce several new added buildings and services on a piecemeal basis. This type of construction will cause a scattering of resources rather than a collective operation.

Unite and conquer

Article Abstract:

Partnerships can be more effective for specific healthcare operations because they are less expensive than acquisitions. Rural Virginia-based Culpeper Memorial Hospital formed a partnership with its primary care physicians and Health Care Partners to prevent a takeover by the University of Virginia. Culpeper is a basic acute care operation.
