The association of insurance type with cost of dispensed drugs

Article Abstract:

The type of prescription drug insurance coverage was shown to be correlated to the cost of dispensed drugs, whether brand name or generic drugs. Brand name drugs were prescribed under the private third party, indeminity and uninsured types of insurance, with the indemnity and uninsured leaning towards prescriptions with lower unit costs, whether in brand name drugs or generic drugs. This suggest that physicians are responding to the economic conditions and capabilities of their patients when prescribing drugs.

How will medical savings accounts affect medical spending?

Article Abstract:

Many health care experts propose the adoption of medical savings accounts (MSA) in place of comprehensive health insurance coverage to generate cost savings. A comparison of the medical spending of individuals availing of comprehensive health insurance and a combination of catastrophic insurance and MSAs was conducted to determine the amount of medical spending savings. Results showed that individuals who avail of MSAs and catastrophic insurance can reduce their medical spending by between 2-8%.

Premium increases and disenrollment from state risk pools

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the duration of enrollment in eight state risk pools for health insurance from 1988-1991 reveals substantial increases in disenrollment in response to premium increases. A discrete time hazard model was used to estimate the relationship. State risk pools are established for persons who are either medically uninsurable or are asked higher rates than a standard insured person. Some people enroll for extended periods in state risk pools, while many enroll for a limited time.
