The effects of CEO-board relations on hospital performance
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to correlate CEO-board relations and hospital financial performance. It involved 90 acute care hospitals in California where CEO-board relations were reviewed over two time periods in 1985 and 1989. Financial reports were obtained over a six-year period from 1985 to 1990. Parameters of CEO involvement used in the study included board participation, job contract, and performance evaluation. Financial performance was measured using net hospital operating margin. Results showed that CEO-board participation enhances a hospital's financial performance.

Commentary: are hospitals and their boards up to these challenges?
Article Abstract:
Opposing views on the challenges facing hospitals and their governing boards as the health care sector undergoes a significant transformation have previously been presented. While some people foresee a successful transition, others present a less optimistic future for voluntary hospitals. Hospital leaders should ask themselves if they are willing to take the risks associated with change.
