The microbiology laboratory's role in life-threatening infections
Article Abstract:
The role of the laboratory test in managing various infections can differ depending on the immediate life-threatening nature of the infection. Types of appropriate tests and specimen collection guidelines for patients with urinary tract, blood, lung, muscle and tissue, or central nervous infections are presented. Targeting an identified organism with specific rather than broad-spectrum therapy can result in cost savings and decreased drug resistance.
