Article Abstract:
Johns Hopkins Medical Institution's 90 inner-city programs are helping people help themselves. The institution's asthma program, part of the Campaign for Coverage in east Baltimore, MD, educates asthmatic children and their families how to handle flare-ups. The asthma project has succeeded in bringing down hospital admissions and ER use as well as as resulted in a 30% drop in school sick days. Colene Daniel, vice-president of corporate services and community health for the three-hospital John Hopkins Health System, said the long-running philosophy of the system is do with the community.

Where coverage is due; Massachusetts hospitals enroll thousands of uninsured in existing programs
Article Abstract:
Massachusetts residents are benefitting from state hospital programs that boost health care coverage. The effort has helped 47,000 people in the last year enroll in state medicaid programs. The American Hospital Assn campaign is helping people fill out applications and get children signed up, in addition to training hospital staffers to answer questions and spread the word to their communities.
