The racial integration of medical and nursing associations in the United States
Article Abstract:
Both hospital nursing staffs and nursing associations were racially integrated by the early 1950s, while integration of hospital medical staffs has taken much longer. There are still two associations for physicians, the National Medical Association for black physicians and the American Medical Association (AMA) with a majority of white physicians. There is one national association for all nurses, the American Nurses' Association (ANA). This disparate history affects hospitals even in 1992 when the influence of civil rights legislation, as well as Medicare and Medicaid rules, has caused most hospitals to be completely integrated.
