Wanted: deep pockets

Article Abstract:

The median amount needed to begin a physician enterprise has reached $1.5 million, a figure that far supercedes the median $95,000 available to burgeoning medical practitioners. Most of the start-up costs are allocated for practices, buildings and information systems, and most potential practitioners lack business plans that accurately predict future costs. Independent practice associations involve no buying of assets and are the least expensive option for those looking to begin a medical practice.

Getting the lowdown on doctors

Article Abstract:

Massachuetts has begun releasing information on the qualifications and work histories of its doctors, and some entrepreneurial services are coming up with new ways to find and sell similar information in other states. Medi-Net, for example, will provide consumers with reports on physicians, including disciplinary sanctions and actions taken. The American Medical Assn's Physician Select database does not include information on disciplinary action but takes disciplined doctors off its list.

Chicago hopes?

Article Abstract:

The Reece-Grant Acquisition Group, comprising Chicago doctors, and Doctors Community Healthcare Corp, plan to buy Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center and Grant Hospital from Columbia/HCA Healthcare. Michael Reese, once a top-notch teaching hospital, is in an economically blighted part of Chicago, and there has been speculation that the land on which it sits is more valuable than the hospital, itself.
