What do managed care plans do to affect care? Results from a survey of physicians
Article Abstract:
High medical costs in the US have prompted health care providers to seek various cost-cutting measures, as revealed by a survey conducted on 2003 physicians. Among the managed care techniques studied, utilization review (UR) and discounted fees were the most widely adopted by patients and physicians. In fact, UR accounted for 59% of the total patients surveyed, while discounted fees contributed an average of 38%. Results further revealed that implementation of managed care significantly varies among states, particularly in terms of payment systems, profiling and guideline usage.
