Where there's smoke, there's not always an incinerator
Article Abstract:
Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, NY, was accused of polluting the atmosphere with smoke from incineration of medical wastes, but the hospital did not burn medical wastes. The hospital subsequently shut down the incinerator it used for business papers; nevertheless environmentalists continued to cite violations. Finally, the plant manager proved that smoke rising from the hospital was caused by a boiler because fuel oil was used instead of natural gas when the outdoor temperature fell below 23 degrees Fahrenheit.

Medical record analysis can show legal risks
Article Abstract:
Management Prescriptives, a consulting firm in Tampa, FL, helps hospitals identify areas of medical and legal risk by identifying vulnerable areas in their medical records. The firm creates a data base of a hospital's medical records covering an 18-month period and searches for procedures that tend to be involved in legal claims. Management Prescriptives also helps institutions develop preventive measures based on their vulnerability profile.
