75,000 pounds sterling PTSD award

Article Abstract:

The High Court has ruled that the Metropolitan Police must pay damages of 75,000 pounds sterling to a police sergeant who experienced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after witnessing his girlfriend falling out of the back of a police van in Mar 1994. This case comes shortly after the House of Lords ruled that police officers in Yorkshire who suffered the same psychological problems after the 1989 Hillsborough football stadium disaster were not entitled to damages. It is clear that employers face considerable challenges when seeking to restrict their exposure to PTSD liability in relation to witnesses to accidents.

Part of the union

Article Abstract:

A survey into the effectiveness of the Safety Representative and Safety Committee Regulations 1977 (SRSC Regs) showed that numbers of safety representatives in small workplaces has fallen significantly since an earlier survey in 1979. It recommends that unions should develop more effective participation and they should pool their resources with the TUC and set up project groups incorporating independent health and safety experts. The ways in which some individual unions are coping with health and safety issues are discussed.

Article Abstract:

Teambuilding & Leadership, which runs around 50 training and development courses a year across the UK, emphasizes that participants do not require traditional outdoor skills. Its exercises are designed to encourage communication and a structured approach. Team working analysis gives an insight into how each individual's and their fellow team members' actions are seen by the group as a whole. All participants are encouraged to contribute, but they are not made to go beyond their physical or psychological limits.
