A coccidioidomycosis outbreak following the Northridge, Calif, earthquake
Article Abstract:
An outbreak of coccidioidomycosis can occur during earthquakes in certain parts of the world. On January 17, 1994, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook the Northridge area of Los Angeles County. Several large aftershocks hit the Santa Susana mountains north of Simi Valley, producing thousands of landslides that generated dust clouds. During the weeks after the earthquake, health officials detected a local outbreak of coccidioidomycosis, also called Valley fever. Of 203 cases, over half occurred in Simi Valley. Strong winds probably carried the fungus, which lives in soil, into the valley.
