A comparison of the Pipelle device and the Vabra aspirator as measured by endometrial denudation in hysterectomy specimens: the Pipelle device samples significantly less of the endometrial surface than the Vabra aspirator
Article Abstract:
The Vabra aspirator appears to be superior to the Pipelle device for taking tissue samples from the endometrial surface of the uterus. The Vabra aspirator accurately detects most benign and malignant endometrial growths, but the reliability of the Pipelle device has not been determined. Of 25 women planning to undergo hysterectomy, 12 had a pre-surgery biopsy of the endometrial surface with the Pipelle device, and 13 had a pre-surgery biopsy with the Vabra aspirator. All biopsies were conducted by the same person, and all endometrial samples were benign. Three samples, two from the Pipelle device and one from the Vabra aspirator, did not provide enough tissue for diagnosis. The average endometrial surface area sampled with the Pipelle device was 4.2% compared to 41.6% with the Vabra aspirator.

Endocervical sampling by Kevorkian curette or Pipelle aspiration device: a randomized comparison
Article Abstract:
The Pipelle aspiration device may provide adequate samples of cervical tissue with less pain to the patient than the standard Kevorkian curette. The Pipelle device is a narrow, flexible suction aspirator normally used in obtaining samples of uterine tissue. The Kevorkian curette is an instrument that scrapes the cervical tissues and can cause the patient pain. Researchers compared cervical tissue samples obtained by either the Kevorkian curette or the Pipelle device from 52 women with abnormal cervical cells. Tissue samples obtained with the Pipelle device were just as adequate for analysis by pathologists as were Kevorkian curette samples. Patients reported much less pain when the Pipelle device was used.

Usefulness of Pipelle endometrial biopsy in the diagnosis of women at risk for ectopic pregnancy
Article Abstract:
An endometrial biopsy using an instrument called a Pipelle may not be more effective than a D&C for detecting an ectopic pregnancy, according to a study of 32 women. Although this type of biopsy is cheaper than a D&C, it was not very accurate in detecting an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo attaches to the inside of the Fallopian tubes instead of the uterus.
