A full-term newborn boy with chronic respiratory distress
Article Abstract:
A newborn boy was diagnosed with congenital pulmonary lymphangiectasis with thickening of the lungs. Congenital pulmonary lymphangiectasis is a condition acquired before birth characterized by dilation of, and the formation of swellings or masses in the vessels that transport lymph in the lungs. The infant was admitted to the hospital with respiratory distress, and his lungs had a cloudy appearance on a chest X-ray. He was conceived while his father was undergoing chemotherapy for a recurrence of leukemia. Genetic testing before birth revealed that the infant had chromosomal abnormalities. He underwent a lung biopsy in the hospital, and was diagnosed with congenital pulmonary lymphangiectasis. The pulmonary condition may have been caused by the infant's chromosomal abnormalities. He died nine months later from respiratory failure.

A 53-year-old man with acute renal failure, cortical blindness, and respiratory distress
Article Abstract:
A 53-year-old man was admitted to a hospital with sudden-onset of kidney failure, blurred vision, abdominal pain and respiratory distress. CT and MRI scans revealed small strokes in his brain. His arms and legs were covered with bruises and evidence of bleeding under the skin. This was evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation, a disorder caused by excessive blood clotting. Biopsies of lymph nodes revealed that he had metastatic cancer, which probably originated in his stomach. He died during hospitalization and autopsy showed stomach cancer that had spread to his lungs.
