Article Abstract:

Treating pressure sores costs over 300 million pounds sterling per year in the UK alone. A survey has revealed that 15% of pressure sores are already present on admission into hospital, while 70% appear within 2 weeks of admission. More than 90% of pressure sores are located in the lower part of the body. A case study of a 94-year-old widow with several pressure sores on her lower body is included.

Treating postural hypotension

Article Abstract:

Postural hypotension (PH) is a relatively common condition in older people, and many commonly used drugs can exacerbate it. It is linked to a variety of conditions and can be transient or long-term. Treatment involves diagnosing and treating the underlying cause, and avoidance of the factors that exacerbate symptoms. Nurses have an important role to play in educating patients and offering advice.

Falls in older people: taking a multidisciplinary approach

Article Abstract:

The various risk factors for falling in elderly patients, both intrinsic issues that include mobility difficulties and extrinsic issues, which include clutter on the floor are described. Multidisciplinary steps to help prevent patients from falling in the hospital and at home are discussed.
