Electronic fetal heart rate monitoring: early neonatal outcomes associated with normal rate, fetal stress, and fetal distress

Article Abstract:

A classification system for ranking electronic fetal heart rates as normal, fetal stress, or fetal distress can identify fetuses at risk of a poor outcome. In a study of 898 fetuses, 29% had tracings classified as fetal stress and 1% had tracings classified as fetal distress.

A multicenter controlled trial of fetal pulse oximetry in the intrapartum management of nonreassuring fetal heart rate patterns

Article Abstract:

Fetal pulse oximetry may reduce the rate of cesarean delivery in fetuses with abnormal heart rate patterns, according to a study of 1,010 women. Fetal pulse oximetry involves placing a catheter with an oxygen sensor at the tip inside the vagina. The sensor can measure oxygen levels through the skin on the baby's scalp.

Dyatocia in nulliparous patients monitored with fetal pulse oximetry

Article Abstract:

Significantly nonreassuring fetal heart rate patterns predict cesarean delivery for dystocia among nulliparous patients with normally oxygenated fetuses in a setting of a standardized labor management protocol confirming the observations in the randomized controlled trial of fetal pulse oximetry in the United States.
