A new look at dietary carbohydrate: chemistry, physiology and health
Article Abstract:
A new means of classification for starches and sugars is recommended following the discovery that the physiological effects of absorbed carbohydrates varies with their composition. Researches have supported classification based on molecular size or degree of polymerisation into sugars, digosaccharides and polysaccharrides to be the most practicable framework for carbohydrates. Such classification would enable proper monitoring of diet therapies recommended to patients with diabetes, or cardiovascular problems and those who are obese.

A simplified approach of assessing adult chronic energy deficiency
Article Abstract:
The use of body mass index (BMI) together with indices of energy turnover in the classification of adult chronic energy deficiency (CED) was assessed among three deprived populations in Africa and Asia. It was revealed that the combined indicators produced inconsistent results which were influenced by instability in physical activity levels. BMI gave more accurate values despite changing BMI distribution and is recommended for assessing CED. Its use lessens the chances of classifying thin but active individuals as malnourished.

The potential use of maternal size in priority setting when combating childhood malnutrition
Article Abstract:
A method for assessing the nutritional status of a household and identifying the most pressing needs in fighting childhood malnutrition is presented. The approach measures the relationship between childhood malnutrition and the body mass indexes of mothers or adult women in the same household. By evaluating these measurements, policy makers can identify the most pressing problems, whether they be inadequate food availability, poor parental care or the need for improved public health measures.
