A one-woman crusade

Article Abstract:

Tsering Lhamo established a nursing shelter in Kathmandu, Nepal for Tibetan refugees fleeing persecution for religious and political beliefs in their own country. Many of the 3,000 refugees suffer frost-bite and gunshot wounds during their escape and she found there was little help offered to them when they arrived in Nepal. The clinic was funded by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in 1992. Lhamo is aided by an American doctor David Shlim who runs his own surgery in Kathmandu. She runs the clinic almost single-handed because few Nepalese will help in the treatment of Tibetans.

Fellow travellers

Article Abstract:

Self help groups can often provide sufferers with an opportunity to talk and gain advice in order to lead better lives. Information on such groups is often not passed to the people who could most benefit and self-help groups are looking for more support and promotion from healthcare professionals. Nurses are ideally placed to pass on information and are often the link between group and patient, although they need to remain impartial in case they are seen to be endorsing alternative medicines or therapy.
